Water Shade Project
With the influence of Indian Government water shade yojna is been carried out in and every state of India and the management is been done by state gram vikas and at district level district gram vikas agency used to handle financial management.
So this Yojna is been handled at State level by Gujarat government's Gram Vikas department.
At the district level DRDA is handling district Gram Vikas agency. District Gram Vikas agency Officer is the chairman of DRDA.
So each and every financial and other sort of management of Rajkot Water shade is been carried out at District Gram Vikas Agency, Junction plot, Rajkot. The short form is DRDA.
In Rajkot district water shade Yojna DRDA has played an important role.
After retirement from 1/1/1987 Premjibhai is involved in trees cultivation, well recharging and construction of Check dam by "Cement Tako" yojna i.e. providing cement as a supporting agent to villagers and farmers.
In the area of tree cultivation mostly those seeds had been planted which can easily grow at unused land.
In the area of well recharging by providing cement pipes free of charge we had done a good job for the farmers and villagers.
For the people who wishes to construct check dam cement was provided free of cost.
In all the above areas initially seeds, cement pipes and cement was been provided and rest of the work was done by the beneficiaries and later when the beneficiaries started getting benefits they started financing on there own expense.
When all the above work was in its childhood stage at that time we came in contact with lots of people in Saurashtra, Gujarat & India.
In all Anilbhai Shah is the main person. He after retirement from " Agakhan Rural Support Programme,India" in 1987 was in constant touch with Premjibhai via letters and personal meet. He later then decided to visit our work. So we planned to take 70 - 80 farmers from Sayla and Gadu and visited with Mr. Anil Shah and showed him our work like well recharging, seed cultivation & check dam. During that time Indian Government was planning to start Water Shade yojna.
Indian Government thought the work done by our organization is very good and beneficial to so many people. So Indian government called a meeting of all those private organizations (N.G.O.) which where involved in such type of work. In that Anilbhai Shah was also called. At the end of meeting it was been told by private organization that "Unless and until there is no public partnership in such type of work the local will not understand that the work is been done for the benefits of themselves only. There must be public partnership in such type of work and private organizations are not working without public partnership. So it was decided that at the country level all such type of work is to be carried out by N.G.Os."
At the last Shri Anilbhai told me (Premjibhai) that "Premjibhai you are supposed to do the work of Water Shade." I told him that "I am an independent man and I work on the path of Gandhiji and in the work of Water Shade I might have to meet government employees and if any one of them ask me to done any sort of non ethical work I could lose my temper. So please don't involve me in this Water Shade yojna. I am happy with my other work of seed cultivation, well recharging and check dam." Anilbhai told me that "You have to carry on with your own work but in addition you also have to start this Water Shade yojna because such type of work can be done by you as you are a master in rural development work and having heartily feelings about these rural people. I had worked as a government employer for many years and I will solve the problem if any occurs while working with government employees." Keeping faith on Mr. Anilbhai "Vruksha Prem" started working on Water Shade.
Rain Water Harvesting:
To increase the depth of well blasting is done. This distribution of explosive was done by premjibhai, when a farmer from Kolki arrived and said: 'I have cultivated sugarcane but water is not sufficient what should I do?' then I provided explosive to increase the depth of well, the depth of well when increased about 10 to 15 feet there was plenty of water that two machines could be use satisfactorily without finishing the source of water
Second year same problem to grow sugarcane water was not sufficient and same answer use of explosive to further increase depth of well and water was available.
Third year same problem and same solution.
Premjibhai thought that, if we go increasing the depth of well we will meet hands with Americans through wells? Therefore water of rain should be feed to well to overcome the problem of water crisis in the bottom of well
So From 1960, Premjibhai started to discuss with friends, with farmers about rain water harvesting, but nobody was ready to understand as water was readily available with increasing the depth of well.
But I thought that if nobody is ready to recharge their well, I should do at least on my own well. So in 1968-1969 I recharged my well in one of my farm in Upleta at that time even my friends were not ready to understand.
Till 1968 to 1975 we did conversation on recharge of well (rain water harvesting). In 1975 I transferred to Mumbai and had to stay there from 1975 to dec1986. Till then the work of water harvesting remained stopped. I retired on 1-1-1987 and came to Upleta and started working on project like planting seeds to grow trees, well recharge, cement tanks, etc.
One day a farmer asked: "I want to recharge well. But where are cement pipes?" Immediately he was told that we will supply cement pipes. Then farmer said "How will I come to take pipes?" In our truck we will supply you cement pipes to your village. On the next day we loaded truck with pipes and was sent to his farm and village. Like this approximately 60 trucks (50 thousand feet cement pipes) were distributed in villages without any charge to farmers.
One experience: We use to load truck with cement pipes and asking farmers if he wants then we use to drop wherever they want may be it will be near the well of farmers then we use to ride the truck though farms and drop at their desired places and that also without any charge. While unloading the truck if no workers are available then we by ourselves unload at their desired place. In that one farmer asked keeping hands in pocket 'keep the pipes correctly'. Then it seems to loose control over mind. But we were understanding that after recharging of this well this farmer will reap benefits from the storage of water in well to supply his farm which he doesn't know. Therefore it seems that he is doing some .. After unloading the pipe we use to ask 'Are the pipe arranged properly?'
After that due to leverage of funds we were not in position of delivering pipes and other organization also started supplying pipes & so "Vruksha Prem Seva Trust" stopped supplying cement pipes from 1994.
Individual Rain Water Harvesting Structures
At the time of water sacristy storage of water is required and so rain water is only option and that water from terrace, roof, slopes is stored in underground tanks, hand pump or bore wells. Now one can store a large amount of water in underground tank sufficient till year.
All this stored water is available only from terrace; roof or slopes but compound water is rendered useless which mixes with river and finally sea.
This compound water storage was started by Premjibhai in 1973 when he constructed his own house and implemented in that, which is simple and everyone can implement it.
The plot remaining after construction of house is filled with filtered sand after removing about 3 feet murum due to which the rain water collected from plot will peculate in sand where all water from terrace and compound is collected.
And "compound water harvesting" is done instead of "roof water harvesting" by this rain water from whole compound is blocked -
